How to get rid of Molluscum Contagiosum

Molluscum Contagiosum is a viral infection that is part of the poxvirus family.  It is spread by coming into direct contact with someone who has it (usually by directly touching the lesions).  The virus is very common in school-age children.  So how to get rid of Molluscum Contagiosum?

Molluscum Contagiosum is small white spots that once burst or soften can release a sticky thick white fluid.  Once they burst, they can bleed and turn red in colour.  The white spot is the contagious part of the condition, so the area should never be wiped as it will cause the condition to spread to other parts of the body.  We learned this from very early on when trying to treat our daughter.

If the condition is severe, your GP may prescribe MolluDab.  MolluDab is a topical solution of potassium hydroxide which is applied directly to the lesions.  If you use this method, you should only apply the product directly to the white spot.  Once the spot is open, you should stop applying it.

If left alone, Molluscum will eventually crust over and heal by itself after a period of time.  It may leave patches of lighter or darker skin afterward.  Some cases of Molluscum are known to last for up to four years.  In adults, the virus can be spread by sexual contact.

Our daughter suffered from this condition in May 2019.  The whole process lasted six weeks of us trying different remedies until we found this one, four weeks into the condition.

Before you follow our guide, please check with your GP or health professional that it is safe for you to do so.

Everyone reacts differently to any type of treatment and it may take a longer or shorter time for the spots to heal with each person.  You may find that this treatment may not work for you, however, we feel confident that all of the methods we used in our guide below helped our daughter to get over this condition after two weeks of following it, rather than leaving it to heal by itself.

Following our research, Thuja should NOT be used by pregnant women or if breastfeeding.  You should ALWAYS check with your GP first if you are taking any medical conditions, taking any form of medication, have any allergies or currently using antihistamines.

We started using Nelsons Clikpak Thuja and Thuja Cream on the 6th May 2019.

Things to remember:

  1. Always use a fresh clean towel every time you have a bath or shower.
  2. Put on fresh clean clothes every day until the spots disappear.
  3. Put on fresh clean pyjamas every day until the spots disappear.
  4. Change your bedding twice a week.  If the spots come into direct contact with your bedding or dressing gown at any time, put them straight in the wash.
  5. If the white part of a spot breaks open, put on some marigolds, get a tissue and carefully pinch it slightly to remove the white part of the spot (being very careful not to let it spread and bin the tissue straight away).
  6. Follow this guide step by step if you want to know how to how to get rid of Molluscum Contagiosum.

Follow our guide:

NEVER WIPE THE SPOTS WITH A FLANNEL, THE SPOTS ARE CONTAGIOUS AND CAN SPREAD TO OTHER PARTS OF THE BODY IF THE SPOT BREAKS OPEN.

Every Day

  1. Run a warm bath.
  2. Sprinkle some Sea Salts in the water.  Add some oilatum bath formula (this should help avoid your skin becoming too dry afterwards).
  3. Sit in the bath for 15 minutes being careful not to wipe the areas where the spots are present.
  4. Once you have finished bathing, shower off with water.
  5. Using a fresh clean towel, pat your skin dry.  In the areas where the spots are present, pat the skin dry using different sides of the towel over each area where the spots are present, never wipe the spots as the spots are contagious and will spread to other parts of the body if wiped.  If the spots are in more than one area, use a fresh clean towel over each area.  If legs/thighs/arms have spots, use one side of the towel for one leg and the other side of the towel for the other.  Get a clean towel and repeat if the spots are also on the arms.  Never use the same towel over different areas of the body.
  6. Using a cotton bud, apply Thuja Cream to each white spot.  You can use your normal cream on other parts of the body where no spots are present.
  7. Completely cover the area where spots are present with fresh clean clothing/pyjamas so that the spots do not transfer to other parts of the body, bed linen etc whilst you sleep or to other people while you are at school, work etc.  If the spots are on the arm and you cannot wear a long-sleeved top, apply a bandage over the spots and change it every day.
  8. Take 1 tablet of Nelsons Clikpak Thuja, 30c in the morning, 1 at lunchtime and 1 before bed.
  9. If the white part of a spot breaks open, put on some marigolds, get a tissue and carefully pinch it slightly to remove the white part of the spot (being very careful not to let it spread and bin the tissue straight away).
  10. Following these steps will help you if you want to know how to get rid of Molluscum Contagiosum.

After a few weeks, you should find that no new spots appear and you will be left with red spots that need to continue to heal.  You can now stop using the tablets but keep using the cream until spots have completely healed.

Once the spots have completely healed and there is no broken skin, rub a little Bio-Oil onto the areas where the skin tone is uneven.  This will help to improve the appearance of the skin tone.
