How to change prepayment meter to a standard energy meter
Given the current climate and worries about the costs associated with energy bills right now, it is worth researching whether switching from a prepayment or credit meter to a standard meter can save you money on your fuel bills. Unfortunately, cheaper energy tariffs offered by some suppliers are not usually made available to prepayment customers. Now has never been a better time to look into this to see if you can save money with your fuel bills this winter.  So, how to change prepayment meter to a standard energy meter?
If your home has a prepayment meter, you may be paying higher prices for your fuel. You cannot switch to a different provider using a comparison site because the process is more involved (a new credit meter would need to be installed in your home).  You may also need to pay a fee to have a new meter installed.
The best thing to do right now is to work out whether this will actually save you money.

Follow our guide:
- Contact your existing supplier to find out whether you can switch to a standard meter.
- Your supplier will run a credit check on you, then they will decide whether or not they believe you will be able to keep up with the payments.
- If you are successful, your supplier may charge you a fee to remove your prepayment meter and install a new standard meter. Â The process can take up to two to three weeks.
- If you are unsuccessful, you may need to look at your credit score and make changes to it. For guidance, click here.
