Law change for car booster seats from 1st March 2017

What is the current law?

ALL CHILDREN, when travelling in a car up to the age of 12 years old or up to 135cm tall MUST use a car seat.  Current rules state that children as young as 3 or 15kg may use a backless booster seat.

What is the new law?

  • You CANNOT use backless booster seats for children aged 12 years old and under or if they are under 135cm tall.
  • You ARE allowed to use backless booster seats for children aged 12 years old and over or if they are over 135cm tall) from 1st March 2017.

Do I need a buy a new high backed booster car seat?

Yes, if your child is under 12 years old and/or under 135cm tall.  If you already own one, then you do not need to purchase a brand new one.  It is the law that has changed, not the actual product(s).
